How to Remove Rust Stains From Toilets, Sinks & Bathtubs

There’s a variety of different stains that can build up around your home, more specifically your toilets, sinks, and bathtubs. One of those stubborn stains you may find lurking around your bathrooms is rust. It showcases itself typically as an orange or brown streak and can occur very similar to how other stains do.

You may notice rust forming when you don’t routinely clean your bathroom and kitchen appliances, or if you have hard mineral deposits. You’ll typically run into this problem if your home uses well water or water with large amounts of iron.

As unappealing as rust stains are, they can be easily removed if you use the proper cleaning products. There’s also plenty of tools and environmentally-friendly methods when cleaning your toilets, sinks, and bathtubs that are simple and inexpensive. Gloves, masks, and a pumice stick can help keep you safe and out of the reach of not only germs, but chemicals that could impair you in some way if inhaled.

Below are 3 DIY household solutions to help you tackle those hard-to-clean rust stains.

3 Easy-to-Make Homemade Rust Removers

Lemon Juice, Salt & Borax Power

You can create a paste by mixing an acidic juice with both salt and Borax Powder. This generally removes rust stains by combining a cup of Borax with a half cup of lemon juice and then stir until it becomes a paste. Make sure to apply it with a sponge, so that it can absorb into the steel or porcelain. After a few hours, wash off the paste with some water and the rust should be gone.

Distilled Water & White Vinegar

Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Adding more vinegar if you’re dealing with a tougher stain. Allow this solution to absorb and sit for a period of time before rinsing.

Baking Soda & White Vinegar

Apply upwards of a half cup of baking soda to the inside of your toilet bowl, sink, or bathtub. You then want to take a spray bottle filled with white vinegar and apply it to the inside of the toilet, allowing it to absorb into the baking soda. If you still notice stains after rinsing, consider adding more baking soda and applying warm water.
